SHARE OF THE CONSUMER RETAIL $

Farm Gate value is green, Retail value is orange.

Green – the price a farmer receives for a 220kg farm animal.

Orange – the money the retailer receives from selling the meat from that same animal (includes what the processor got as well)

The increase in the average retail beef price has been achieved despite producers’ cattle prices remaining largely unchanged for over a decade.

The additional $2billion spent by Australian consumers on beef since 2001 represents an extra $500 for every animal processed for domestic consumption.

Virtually 100% of this additional spend by consumers has been retained by the processing and retail sectors. Not one dollar has flowed back to the producer.
